FIFA vs NFF
The members of the Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation said on Wednesday that they would propose to the General Assembly, the dissolution of the NFF Electoral Committee and the NFF Electoral Appeals Committee which were put in place for the 2014 elections.
The position of the Executive Committee
followed the decision of the electoral body to disqualify many of those who had signified their intention to contest in the election which was billed to hold on August 26. The NFF acting president, Mike Umeh, was top on the list of those disqualified on Wednesday. Also disqualified is a former secretary general of the NFF Taiwo Ogunjobi. A former Nigeria captain Segun Odegbami completed the list of those screened out.
The setting then left only Chris Giwa cleared to contest, which will then make him unopposed for the NFF presidency. Going by the electoral guidelines, Giwa, who is the owner of Nigeria premier league club, Giwa FC, will automatically be the new NFF president when the election is eventually held.
Giwa’s special treatment gives strength to the speculations that the sports ministry is pushing to install him as the next NFF president at all cost.
The NFF board also made it clear on Wednesday that the election billed for August 26 will have to move to another date to enable them tackle the challenges created by the electoral body.
The acting first vice president of the NFF, Shehu Adamu, said the electoral process, “has been, unfortunately, littered with avoidable flaws and deliberate disenfranchisement of eligible members of the Nigeria football family.
“Following from a statement by the Acting President which was made public eight days ago, in which the NFF said it was worried by the hitches and complaints and widespread criticisms of the process, we have discovered that nothing has improved and it was rather allowed to get worse.
“The Electoral Committee has failed to satisfy the yearnings of the football family for a fair play and credibility of the process. We are deeply disappointed at how people have been nonchalantly disenfranchised.
“In the interest of fair play and based on our commitment to ensuring a credible election that will lift the name of our country, the NFF Executive Committee hereby proposes the dissolution of the Electoral and Electoral Appeals Committee, to the Congress, which we are calling for Tuesday, 26th August, 2014.
“As it is, we have to start the entire process afresh. In view of this, it will be impossible to hold the elections as earlier scheduled on Tuesday, 26th August, 2014. We will propose a new date for the General Assembly and consult with FIFA on this matter.
“As a result, the Electoral Committee and the Electoral Appeals Committee would have to step aside for now.
